How to Choose the Right Nicotine Strength for Vaping in the UAE

Getting your nicotine strength right is arguably the single most important factor in whether vaping works for you as a cigarette alternative. Too low and you’ll keep reaching for cigarettes. Too high and every vape feels overwhelming. Most people who try vaping and go back to smoking never got this balance right. This guide will help you get it right the first time.

Understanding Nicotine Strength Labels

Nicotine strength in e-liquids is measured in milligrams per millilitre (mg/ml) or as a percentage. The two are the same thing — 20mg/ml is the same as 2%, and 50mg/ml is the same as 5%. In the UAE market, the most common strengths you’ll encounter are:

  • 3mg (0.3%) – Very low nicotine. Used mainly by sub-ohm vapers who already have low dependence or are stepping down from higher strengths.
  • 6mg (0.6%) – Low-moderate. Common in freebase e-liquids used in higher-power devices.
  • 20mg (2%) – This is the standard nicotine salt strength in the UAE. Suitable for light-to-moderate smokers (up to around 15 cigarettes a day) using a pod kit.
  • 50mg (5%) – High strength nic salt. Recommended for heavy smokers (20+ cigarettes a day) or those who find 20mg insufficient when switching from cigarettes.

Matching Strength to Smoking Habit

The most reliable starting point is your current smoking habit:

  • Light smoker (less than 10 cigarettes a day): Start with 20mg nic salt. It’s enough to satisfy without being overwhelming.
  • Moderate smoker (10–20 cigarettes a day): 20mg is a good starting point. Some people find 50mg works better for the first few weeks and then step down to 20mg over time.
  • Heavy smoker (20+ cigarettes a day, or strong cigarette brands): Start with 50mg. You need enough nicotine to match what you’re used to getting, otherwise the cravings will push you back to smoking.
  • Not trying to quit, just vaping recreationally: 3mg or 6mg freebase in a sub-ohm device. High nicotine salts at this stage would be unnecessarily strong.

Device Type Matters Too

This is the part people often get wrong. The same nicotine strength hits very differently depending on what you’re using to vape it.

In a pod kit (like the OXVA XLIM or Uwell Caliburn), you’re producing a small amount of vapour per puff, so 20mg–50mg nic salt delivers a controlled, satisfying dose. In a sub-ohm tank running at 80W, you’re producing enormous amounts of vapour per puff — using 50mg nic salt at that wattage would deliver a dangerously high dose very quickly. High-power devices need low-strength freebase (3mg–6mg) to compensate for the volume of vapour produced.

The short version: pod kit = nic salt (20mg or 50mg), sub-ohm mod = freebase (3mg or 6mg). Don’t mix these up.

What If You’re Not Sure?

If you’re using a disposable vape — which most new vapers in the UAE start with — look at the nicotine percentage on the label. Disposables in Dubai typically come in 2% (20mg) or 5% (50mg). Whatever strength you’re using in your disposable is the right starting point for a refillable pod kit and nic salt e-liquid.

Stepping Down Over Time

Many vapers use the flexibility of refillable devices to gradually reduce their nicotine intake. This is one of the advantages a pod kit has over disposables — you can move from 50mg to 20mg to 10mg at your own pace without changing your device. If stepping down is a goal for you, it’s worth thinking about this when choosing your first kit.
